Bear
Paw Battlefield is the site of the last battle of the four-month Nez
Perce War of 1877. The Nez Perce, pursued by U.S. soldiers,
were attempting to flee to Canada. On September 30, U.S.
soldiers made a surprise dawn attack on the Nez Perce, south of
present day Chinook, Montana. A siege ensued, and Chief Joseph
surrendered on October 5, pictured on the plate above.
