Andersonville was an infamous
prison camp operated by the Confederates, near present-day Americus,
Georgia. Captured Union Soldiers were crammed into the open
air barricade with no shelter and little food. Buffeted by the
elements and plagued by disease, many succumbed to death. When
a natural spring (above) suddenly gushed up in 1864, the prisoners
were overwhelmed with joy.
