Gallatin City was founded in 1862 at the Headwaters of the Missouri
River, fifty-seven years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition
arrived and named the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin Rivers.
Gallatin City was vacated by 1890, as Bozeman became the main town
in the area. The only building remaining is the shell of the
Gallatin Hotel, now preserved in the Missouri Headwaters State Park.
