Egrets are part of the heron family.
Most egrets are white or buff, and a few develop plumes during
the breeding season. In the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, egret plumes were in great demand as hat decor, and
massive numbers of the birds were killed.
The birds pictured above were
photographed in June 2006 at a nesting ground in a swamp in
Douglas, Georgia.
